South Africa won an international bid to become the third country in the world to host a research laboratory of the International Centre for Genetic and Biotechnology which is an UN research, training and technology sharing agency.
The International Centre for Genetic and Biotechnology (ICGEB) will develop tailor made research programmes focused on key needs in Africa, such as infectious and chronic diseases, staple crop development and the use of biotechnology to further develop the country’s manufacturing and industrial sectors.
“The centre’s focus is to extend the work on infections diseases, especially HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. The centre is benefiting people with cheaper medicine, better research in vaccines and research in agricultural products,” says Mmampie Mabusela from the Department of Science and Technology.
The centre, which will attract some of the worlds top biotechnology researchers to South Africa, will be officially be opened by President Thabo Mbeki on September 10.
