Eskom aims to establish an expansion programme

The national power utility Eskom says they are in the process of certifying funding to boost their expansion programme.
Eskom’s Managing Director of Demand Side Management, Andrew Etzinger says the programme is aimed at expanding generation capacity. “There are various aspects to the programme, we have three power stations which are in the process of being returned to service. We are building smaller power stations which can be built quickly,” says Etzinger.
He says in the Western Cape two stations were commissioned last year, their capacity will be doubled and a wing farm is going to be built for 2010.
Eskom believes the answer to the national energy shortage on their energy grid lies in building large coal fired or nuclear fired power stations.
“These are the power stations that will give us the necessary break on our system in order to grow demand again. The first of these stations will be coming in stream in 2012 but it unfortunately does take seven to ten ears to build power stations because of the enormous size,” explains Etzinger.
