Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele announced he would return the gifts he received from a group of contractors which included a luxury Mercedes Benz S500 worth almost R1m.
Ndebele was reported as saying that he made the decision voluntarily after consulting with the ANC and his family.
According to reports Ndebele made the decision despite advice from President Jacob Zuma and the ANC leadership that there was nothing wrong with him keeping the car as long as he declared it within 60 days of receiving it according to a provision in the Executive Code of Ethics.
