Approximately 20 people have died in an accident on the N1 at the Hex River Pass today.

It is believed that the bus overturned on its left hand side and the top of the double decker was crushed between the mountains.

Paramedics found that people had been flung out of the bus and were trapped underneath the wreckage.

The bus was travelling towards Cape Town.

ER24’s Vanessa Jackson said they confirm that 34 people were transported to hospital that were in a critical condition and 36 have minor to moderate injuries.

Jackson adds that they were all transported to either the Paarl or Wochester hospital for further care and from there they will be transported to other hospitals if any further medical care is required or admission to hospital.

The fire and rescue department is still at the scene and are using the Jaws of Life to cut away at the wreckage to determine if there are any more people trapped under the bus.
