Parliaments Police Portfolio Committee has called on Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega to resolve the shortage of DNA rape kits across the country.
The kits are helpful in collecting forensic evidence from rape victims at police stations.
Acting Committee Chairwoman of the Police Portfolio Committee Annelize van Wyk said the shortage of rape kits could mean that crucial evidence is lost.
National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Phuti Setati said that it was realized that there is an over-supply in other provinces of forensic kits; as the result they have embarked on a redistribution process, to where shortages are being experienced.
“The SAPS is expected to make deliveries of the forensic kits to where they are needed” Setati added.
