The Western Cape Premier Helen Zille has condemned the recent mob killing in Khayelitsha.

A suspected robber was beaten and set alight on Tuesday, it is alleged that he robbed two residents in the area.

The 26 year old man was caught by residents in Makaza, after being accused of snatching bags of two women in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the area.

Police Spokesperson Andre Traut said a case of murder has been opened but no arrests have been made.

Premier Helen Zille said the taking of a human life and the disregard for the rule of law that took place in this vigilante killing has no place in a constitutional democracy.

Zille Spokesperson Zak Mbhele said the Premier understands the frustrations and angry desperation for the community to resort to vigilantism.

Mbhele added that Zille has appealed to the Police Minister to cooperate with the commission, so that it can complete its work and the police can deliver a better service to communities.
