A joined effort between Metro Police and the Law enforcement Department resulted in a significant confiscation of firearms, ammunition and illicit drugs. The City of Cape Town said an increase of 34% was seen year-on-year of firearms removed from the streets by the City’s metro Police and Law Enforcement Departments.
The rate of confiscations of imitation firearms
increased to 431 from 193.
City added that their enforcement agencies
confiscated more than 300 firearms out of circulation last year, and yet gun
violence remains never-ending despite SAPS destroying more than 250 000 weapons
in the last five years, the municipality questioned where the unlimited supply of
illicit fire arms is coming from.
“The City has said time and again that its
enforcement agencies are capable of investigating crimes to boost conviction
rates, and help slow the free flow of illegal firearms and drugs into our
communities. It remains our hope that the call for the devolution of criminal
investigative powers will be answered, for the benefit of our residents,” said
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith.
