On Wednesday 5 September, Stellenbosch University took part in an innovative national project to create HIV/Aids awareness.
As part of a drive initiated by the Higher Education HIV/ Aids Programme (HEAIDS), the Vice-Rector, Operations, Prof Julia Smith, has challenged some 12 staff members to join him and do a voluntary test for HIV/Aids. In turn they will each challenge 5 other staff members to go for the test.
“We believe at this stage that universities at this stage are one of the most powerful institutions in South Africa to make a difference, we not just working with people in the high risk group between 20 and 30 but we are also a education institution, so if people don’t learn here about HIV/Aids and learn how to model leadership, a then we believe they might never learn it,” said Monica Du Toit the co-ordinator of the campaign.
Testing will be done in the Council Chambers of the SRC. An individual’s finger is pricked and blood is drawn. Rapid test technology is used to yield a result in about 10 to 15 minutes.
