Free State health officials have put emergency measures in place to improve security at Bloemfontein’s Pelonomi Hospital and other state facilities.

This follows an incident last Saturday where a female doctor was raped.

The 35-year-old doctor was hit over the head with a brick and raped in one of the wards.

The three suspects have been arrested and they include a 16-year-old boy.

The measures put in place include the deployment of 37 trained police reservists per shift.

Visiting hours as and access will be strictly controlled.

Free State health department head Sipho Kabane says service at the hospital will continue as usual in spite of the stricter security measures.
