The Western Cape Community safety department said today the only way to reduce or stop gangsterism and drugs in the province was by reinstating specialised units.

Over the past few days, a number of people have died in Cape Town because of gang-related events.

Community safety MEC Dan Plato will be attending the quarterly ministers and members of executive council (MINMEC) meeting where he plans to raise the issue of specialised drug and gang units.

The MEC’s spokesperson Greg Wagner said these units are an effective way to combat crime in communities.
