The Commission for Gender equality has noted the refusal of bail for one of the accused Jonathan Davids in the Anene Booysen’s rape and murder trail.

Co-accused Johannes Kana did not seek bail.

The CGE said it hopes the state in preparing this case will up its game to ensure that people’s confidence in the justice system is enhanced, especially for victims and the survivors of violence and gender based crime.

CGE’s Amanda Gouws said the issue is that Mr Davids did not get bail even though he proclaims his innocent and as CGE they say that this is the way the law works, the justice system works and he will be remanded and they hope that he will have a fair trial.

Gouws says the important thing of bail is that it can be denied on presumption that somebody was involved in a murder but it can also be the fierce to protect someone, when they go back into the community there may be retribution.

Gouws furthermore adds that she thinks for both Davids and Kanna there is a big possibility that if they go back into the Bredarsdorp community that there may be vigilante justice against them.
