Some schools in theWestern Cape are up in arms
over the provincial department of education announcing that pupils who had
repeatedly failed Grade 10 by the end of 2012 must progress to Grade 11.
Some schools in the
Department Spokesperson Paddy Attwell said
they are following requirements published in the Government Gazette.
Attwell said this is done to ensure that
learners progress with their age group.
Meanwhile Provincial Secretary of the South
African Democratic Teachers Union Jonvan Rustin said this would create major
problems for schools.
Rustin added that they are disappointed
that the department of education has not implemented the correct assessment
policy.
Rustin said this may have disadvantaged the
learners from 2007 and may put schools in jeopardy, because the learners may
have to be promoted at the end of the first quarter.
