A 72-year-old tourist was this weekend killed by a shark at Ports St Johns beach in the Eastern Cape.

The National Sea Rescue Institute attended to the incident whereby the man was swimming with his wife when he was attacked by the shark.

NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said his body was recovered by police and was handed in to the care of the forensic pathology services and an inquest docket has been opened.

Lambinon said the couple were part of a touring group from Austria.
