As part of his over sight role and the responsible MEC for Disaster Management in all the Municipalities, the MEC for Local Government and Housing in the Western Cape, Richard Dyantyi, on Wednesday, briefed the Cabinet on the extent of damages caused by the recent floods in the province.
“The Department identified 50 high risk areas in the province, and majority of them are part of the affected areas,” says Dyantyi.
He adds that these areas are either situated below flood lines, river banks, under power line or rail and or are prone to fires during the summer season.
“In a recent PAF meeting that was held in Worcester on 16 July 2007, the information was communicated to all the municipalities with the intention to enable them to plan and get ready for any disaster that might occur,” says Dyantyi.
The Cabinet has noted with great concern the fact that, the City of Cape Town has not really taken the information seriously and was in fact not ready for the floods.
