A 48 year old man, from Hercules in Pretoria, and his 18 year old daughter in law had been swept out to sea after being swept off rocks by a wave while angling at Pinnacle Point, Mossel Bay.
“The female had managed to get to shore prior to our arrival and she has been treated by paramedics for shock, bruising and lacerations”, says Dawie Zwiegelaar, NSRI Mossel Bay Station Commander.
According to Zwiegelaar a full-scale search followed for the male who was missing.
“During the search the mans body was spotted floating lifeless 300 metres off-shore and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) efforts were initiated by our NSRI crew after the mans body was recovered onto Vodacom Rescuer II and CPR continued en-route to our NSRI rescue base where we were met by Advanced Life Support paramedics who continued CPR but later declared the man dead after all efforts to resuscitate him were exhausted”, he added.
In a separate incident nine patients were involved in a head on collision between two trucks in Plettenberg Bay.
“At least two men were freed from the vehicle wreckage by Metro Rescue Medics and Firemen using the Jaws of Life. One man was declared dead on the scene and seven men were transported to hospitals by ambulances in serious conditions while a man in a critical condition was airlifted to hospital by the Metro Red Cross AMS helicopter”, says Ray Farnham, NSRI Plettenberg Bay Station Commander
