A toll-free helpline for people affected by alcohol and drug abuse has been launched by the City of Cape Town.
This free of charge municipal service will be launched on Tuesday by Executive Deputy Mayor, Councilor Grant Haskin.
“Alcohol and drug abuse has reached crisis proportions in the Cape metropole with devastating effects on the lives of thousands of Capetonians,” says Haskin.
A study conducted by Medical Research Council (MRC), methamphetamine known as ‘tik’ has now appear as the major substance of abuse among Cape Town’s substance abuse treatment patients.
According to Haskin current statistics show that Cape Town is also one of the regions in the country with the maximum number of heroin users in excess of 15 000.
“The City’s Alcohol and Drug helpline will refer the public to the most suitable treatment service providers according to individual circumstances,” he explains.
Haskin says the 24-hour helpline, 0800 212 555 will be facilitated by eight professionally trained call operators working from a central call centre in Wale Street.
