NSRI appeals for coution and safety on water

The National Sea Rescue Institute has appealed to communities to be extra careful when going to beaches.

“As the season changes and we now move into winter it is often found that sea conditions get rough despite still relatively good weather”, says Ian Wienberg NSRI Chief Executive Officer.

According to Wienberg most of the time sea conditions worsen, with bigger swells and stronger currents, sometimes due to storms taking place further out at sea.

“These storms and worsening winter weather in the deep ocean cause our shoreline, particularly along the South African Coast, to experience rougher sea conditions despite still relatively good weather conditions”, he added.

He goes on saying because of the rougher sea conditions NSRI is appealing to bathers to be extreme caution when swimming in the ocean and preferably swim where and when the lifeguards are on duty.

“Children should always have responsible adult supervision at the coast, on our inland waters and at swimming pools,” says Wienberg.

Wienberg gives the following tips to anyone launching any kind of craft onto any water, coastal or inland:

> wear a correctly fitting and correctly fastened life-jacket and carry safety equipment, a whistle, red distress flares, a signalling mirror or CD disc which can be used with sunlight to signal rescuers and have a VHF radio and cell-phone kept in watertight sleeves.
> Wear bright clothing and keep safety top of mind always.
> Always let a responsible person know where you are going, your departure time, route and return time.

Stick to your route and in a sea rescue emergency call the NSRI on their Emergency Number 082911.
