The situation has stabilised after about 250 backyard dwellers clashed with protestors in Joe Slovo flats on Saturday morning
The backyard dwellers are complaining that some residents have waited for 40 years to get houses but nothing was done, but the dwellers felt that it was their turn to receive houses.
Amongst the residents, were pensioners who are as old as 80. Ant Eviction Campaign spokesperson Mandisi Twalo said the police ignored the whole situation.
But police say they did come and attended the situation and at the moment the situation is stable Constable Makepula of the SAPS said,
“The police did come and also the people of the area gathered a meeting and resolved the whole issue’
“The police are still around the place stabilising the situation and a case of malicious damage was opened after a vehicle of a journalist was damaged.”
