Cell phone providers could be fined up to R100 000 for each day they fall short of recording the details of new customers if new draft legislation is passed.
New cellphone users including pre-paid users will have to register their details to their providers or have themselves disconnected.
Customers have to provide their details in order to make it easier for police to tackle organised and ordinary crime by making it easier to track all cellphone owners.
According to the DailyNews the Interception of Communication and Provision of Communication-Related Information Amendment Bill, is being discussed at the National Assembly’s justice committee.
