Two miners were killed in two separate incidents at Gold Fields in Driefontein and at Angloplat in Rustenberg on Friday.

In the first incident a miner was found dead after being trapped underground for more than 15 hours following a tremor that hit Gold Fields Driefontein East Mine near Carletonville on Thursday.
He was trapped along with three other miners who were rescued during a rescue operation.

In the second incident a miner was injured by a drill machine at Angloplat in Rustenberg.

He died of his injuries in the mine hospital, although it is not clear how the accident occurred.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has called for an agent investigation at Angloplat, as four deaths have occurred in the space of a week.

“We are calling for the finalisation of investigations at Gold Fields, so that we know who to blame on this, because qiut obvioously all these incidents are preventable,” says NUM national spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka.
