The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has reaffirmed the federation’s full support for the national strike by public service workers.

Patrick Craven, national spokesperson for Cosatu says, “The strike must continue. We can’t afford to have failure. Strikes will continue on Friday with pickets during lunch times as government has only offered a 6.5 percent increase.”

“Cosatu belives that service delivery can only be improved by improving working conditions, better pay and investment of resources by the state,” says Craven.

The indefinite strike will continue, and Cosatu and affiliates will meet with government again for discussions over the wage increase.

Craven says that only with a settlement that benefits all union members, with talks between unions and government, would end the stike.
