The Democratic Alliance has called for privatization of small-state owned airports.

DA MP of Transport Ian Ollis said the huge costs related to the use of small state owned municipal airports is making them inaccessible to low-cost airlines.

Ollis added that this in return is depriving commuters of the opportunity to move around the country easily and cheaply.

“The Wonderboom and partially owned state airport in Germiston are the example of airports with the A1 jet fuel is very expensive.

If they were privatised then more companies would allow to supply jet fuel, the competition would drive the prices down and make airports use available for low cost airline,” Ollis said.

The DA will be writing to the Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters calling for the privatisation of small municipal owned airports, where feasible, to allow for greater competition and better efficiencies in their operation, by making them more market-driven.
