The Western Cape Department of Health said its stance on training on doctors in
MEC of Health Thenus Botha said the
department is of the view point that the training offered in Cuba is not appropriate
to the health system in the Western Cape .
MEC Botha in a statement said while the
province is facing challenges in recruiting doctors in rural areas it is more
feasible and practical to engage the university faculties in the province to
address this challenge.
Ministerial Spokesperson Helene Rossouw
said it costs a lot of money to send students to Cuba and they must also
adapt to the cultural and language changes, which they find very challenging.
“MEC Botha has put up this matter with
national department of health” Rossouw added.
