The Western Cape Department of Health said its stance on training on doctors in Cuba has not changed.

MEC of Health Thenus Botha said the department is of the view point that the training offered in Cuba is not appropriate to the health system in the Western Cape.

MEC Botha in a statement said while the province is facing challenges in recruiting doctors in rural areas it is more feasible and practical to engage the university faculties in the province to address this challenge.

Ministerial Spokesperson Helene Rossouw said it costs a lot of money to send students to Cuba and they must also adapt to the cultural and language changes, which they find very challenging.

“MEC Botha has put up this matter with national department of health” Rossouw added.
