Seven people were hospitalised and several journalists were attacked when an attempt by the Anti-Eviction Campaign, to occupy empty flats, turned violent.
The situation turned volatile when a group of armed men from the Joe Slovo informal settlement joined the protests.
Two policemen arrived at the scene and loaded the van with the injured people.
AEC co-ordinator Mncdesi Twalo said the backyard dwellers from Langa, Gugulethu and Nyanga tried to occupy the empty flats when people from the Joe Slovo informal settlement surrounded them.
The protesters, wearing red T-shirts, forced open 50 unoccupied flays while Joe Slovo resident protested against their invasion.
The Anti-Eviction Campaign will hold a mass meeting at the Gugulethu Sports complex at 2pm today.
