The SA Democratic Teachers’ Union has warned government to revise its most recent wage offer or face an imminent strike.
Civil servants unions will meet with Public Service and Administration Minister Richard Baloyi in a bid to avoid strike action next week.
Sadtu has called for civil servants to down tools next week Tuesday. Labour is calling for a pay increase of eight-point-five-percent and a one-thousand-Rand housing allowance.
Government says they can’t afford to meet the demands.
The strike gained momentum on Wednesday with two more teachers’ unions issuing a notice to join the nationwide public servants’ strike. Unions said they aim to bring schooling to a halt, 250 000 teachers are expected to take part in the strike.
