Sugarcane farmers in KwaZulu-Natal have experienced a severe drought which could result in lower sugarcane yields.

This is due to the poor summer rainfall period for the months of January to April.

The South African Cane Growers' Association’s Olivia Finnemore says “large parts of sugarcane growing regions in KwaZulu-Natal are experiencing widespread drought, the effects of which could result in lower cane yields during the 2010/11 season.”

She added it is uncertain what effect this would have on cane quality, so it's impossible to estimate with any certainty the actual value of loss.
