The Cape Chamber of
Commerce and Industry said the passing of the Women
Empowerment and Gender Equality Bill has asked the question of the purpose of
public participation.
The Chamber says it wants to work with
Government to ensure legislation that is good, practical and effective.
Chamber Spokesperson Freddy Jacobs said one
of the dangers of this is that one tends to regulate and this is very
dangerous. There is already legislation
in place in terms of employment equity and companies and businesses are asked
to determine what target they are going to achieve in terms of women empowerment
and gender equality.
“It is very difficult for us in business to
understand why we have another law. The
concern is that over regulation in every aspect destroys innovation and the
more you regulate the more difficult it becomes from an economic empowerment
viewpoint”. Jacobs added.
