Home Affairs targeting 100 000 smart id cards issued by end of March

The Department of Home Affairs has since October 2013 processed over 80 000 Smart Card applications and Minister Naledi Pandor said they are on target to getting 100 000 Smart ID cards issued by the 31st of March this year.

Pandor said the number of offices that deal with processing of Smart ID card applications have increased from 28 to 30 across the country.

By April the department wants to have 80 offices nationally.

Pandor said the one concern is that applicants are not all collecting their cards.  People are coming in significantly numbers to apply but then people are not coming back to collect them.

"We are looking at a delivery system to the direct addresses of applicants as well as a call in the media for persons to return to the offices because as you know the whole process of the smart id card is paperless” Pandor added.
