Nationwide handed a list containing the names of 27 employees that are being considered for retrenchment, to Solidarity on Wednesday.
“This comes after the trade union expressed its fears, in a meeting on Wednesday morning, about the job security of Nationwide employees,” says Solidarity spokesperson Jaco Kleyhans.
According to Kleyhans the 27 employees whose names appear on the list are employed at Nationwide Support and specifically at Lanseria, where maintenance of Nationwide aircraft was undertaken by Nationwide Maintenance, up to time of the company’s licence being suspended by the Civil Aviation Authority.
“We are confident that Nationwide Maintenance’s 96 employees can be accommodated by Safair, which currently services Nationwide’s aircraft," says Kleynhans.
According to Kleynhans Nationwide has therefore show that it is not at present considering retrenchments at Nationwide Maintenance.
“This comes as a great relief to us,” says Kleynhans.
According to Kleynhans nineteen workers out of the 27 on the list have already been notified that their employment is to be terminated by January 14th, 2008.
“The company is still endeavouring to save the jobs of the remaining 8 employees. The employees’ skills levels and the LIFO principle were used as criteria in the retrenchments,” he added.
