Despite the launch of the Western Cape Arrive Alive Campaign last week, approximately 35 people have lost their lives since the start of the festive season.

Last year alone, at least 150 people died during the holiday season in the province.

Of the 35 fatalities, 31 died in head-on collisions with eight of the fatalities being drivers, nine passengers and 18 were pedestrians.

“Traffic authorities will be taking action against drunken drivers, speedsters and reckless drivers,” says Provincial Traffic Spokesperson Calvin Visser.

Drivers are asked to adhere to the following rules of the road, to ensure a safer festive season:

· avoid drinking and driving
· avoid speeding
· maintain safe following distances
· avoid reckless driving
· wear your safety belt at all times
· try to avoid distractions while driving e.g. loud music
