Three drivers working for the City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Department were suspended for three days after they were believed to have collected Christmas boxes from residents.
This follows after the city received complaints from the Bantry Bay and Sea point area about workers in the Solid Waste Department.
“The drivers have been suspended without pay. The city has continually warned its staff and also alerted residents that no city employee, in particular those who collect the residents refuse every week are allowed to demand a Christmas box from a resident,” says City spokesperson Charles Cooper.
Cooper added that they also experienced that people under false pretences obtain a t-shirt or overall and knock on doors with books and demand Christmas boxes.
“No residents are under any obligation to provide Christmas boxes, it’s totally against our policy,” says Cooper.
Residents are told to make a note of the time, date, vehicle registration number and to call in and report it to the city in the case of a worker asking for any donation.
