At 11am on Tuesday morning a factory and a stationary train completely burnt down along Voortrekker Road in Salt River, sending huge clouds of smoke up in the area.

According to eye-witnesses on the scene a gas tank exploded in the factory’s welding shop and spread quickly causing huge volumes of black smoke to fill the air.

The train that was standing alongside the factory called Viking Design caught fire it was licked by massive flames. Dozens of fire-fighters and about ten fire-fighting engines were on the scene trying to save the factory but to no avail as the fire spread rapidly.

Curious onlookers on the scene had various versions of what had happened, with some saying that the fire occurred after a braai went wrong, others said that the fire was caused due to fibreglass being set alight.

“It is unconfirmed what took place. We are investigating the matter and will have details later,” says spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management Johan Minnie.

It is unknown at this stage whether anyone was injured in the fire.
