The City of Cape Town has decided to give residents of Happy Valley a bright festive season by supplying the area with power tonight.
Councillor Pieter van Dalen says that the area serves as temporary relocation area for families which had to be removed from areas which are unsafe to them.
“On the 5th of December council had approved that infrastructure of lights and electricity be put into Happy Valley and in less than ten days that infrastructure was put into place,” says van Dalen
A year ago 629 dwellings in the region have already been supplied with electricity.
Prior to the 420 families receiving power tonight, they were already supplied with power in the respective regions that they lived, but due to their re-location they had to make without it.
According to a press statement from the City of Cape Town Irish businessmen, Niall Mellon will build a factory in the Happy Valley area aiming to construct alternative housing units for informal settlements across the Cape metropolitan area.
The initiative will employ 200 local residents and the project strives to build houses at a rate of 100 a week.
The switch on of the lights will be done by Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille in Wimbledon Road, Happy Valley, at 5pm tonight.
