The Congress of the People said it is disappointed at the increase of road deaths over the Easter break.

This as Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters announced that road deaths over this period increased to 287 compared to 2014 where it was 193.

Cope Spokesperson Dennis Bloem said drivers behave with impunity because they feel they can escape the consequences of disobeying the rules and laws of the road.

Bloem said the government is forever making empty promises that government is serious in bringing down the number of deaths whilst it is true that safety in the hands of the people but government is key in securing our roads are safe.

Bloem said COPE calls upon the minister and the government to stop these empty promises and to do more on the roads.
