Minister Nathi Mthethwa speaks out on defacing of statue

Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa said government neither supports nor encourage the defamation or violent removal of any statue.

This follows the defacing of Paul Kruger statue on Church Square in Pretoria.

In a statement Minister Mthethwa said the diverse voices of all citizens of this country must be allowed to express themselves, but guided by the law in our efforts to alter the national heritage landscape.

Ministerial Spokesperson Sandile Memela said as the department we do not support the defacing or violent removal of any statue, instead we encourage our citizens, the youth and their formations to continue to pursue a peaceful resolution of this matter by following the processes that will see them consult with the affected parties and submit and application the relevant authorities that has the legislative responsibility to make sure that this issue is resolved in an peaceful manner.
