The National Union of Mineworkers said it is extremely shocked that Kumba Iron Ore will be closing down its Thabazimbi mine.

Yesterday Kumba confirmed that it had started the consultation process to shut down the mine.

NUM Chief Negotiator at Kumba Iron Ore Lucas Phiri said we believe that over 700 employees will lose their jobs that translate to more than 8 000 families that will suffer.

Phiri said we will now approach and engage the Department of Mineral Resources to intervene so that this comes to an end.
