A new electronic initiative is launched to reduce unemployment in the Western Cape. The initiative is called the Umsebenzi Jobs Portal.

Potential employees and employers can register on the same database to introduce them to each other.

“The idea is that an employer can browse through a list of potential employees. He can spot as many as he wants and examine their qualifications,” says spokesperson for the Department of Public Works and Transport Eric Ntabazalila.

The portal will be made available at 115 points throughout the province. Unemployed people will be taught how to register, place a CV into the system and how to update their details.

The unemployment in the Western Cape is said to stand between 300 000 and 600 000 people.
