5 December 2007

Plans to move forward were discussed on Wednesday after possible maladministration, fraud, corruption and malpractice within the City of Cape Town were detected.

This comes after the MEC for Local Government and Housing in the Western Cape, Richard Dyanti on Friday announced the names of the commission of enquiry.

The commision immediately commenced with it’s work to look into all available documentation concerning the matter.

“We have been briefed with all the available documents at hand, such as the notices that were sent by the MEC to the city requesting certain information and documentation,” says Secretary of Commission, Zithule Twala.

“We have in the process collected further documentation and are still continuing to collect documents and information and are going through it to analyse and see how it makes our work take shape,” says Twala.

The Commission will publish notices informing the public of its existence by Wednesday, 12 December 2007.

“We will issue an invitation to the public to make written and oral submissions on the issue that we have to investigate. Those submissions must be in by the 28th December where after we will study it and call public hearings in the second half of January where members of the public can interact with the process,” says Chairperson of the commission, Justice Nathan Erasmus.

“Police will also be approached by the investigators for any information they have in their possession,” says Erasmus.

Twala added that the public should please be patient, contribute whatever they can and let the process unfold.
