In yesterday’s final deciding match between South Africa and New Zealand in the MTN ODI series on New Zealand, local player Herchelle Gibbs steered South Africa with a brilliant innings of 119 off 101 balls.

Cricket South Africa’s Michael Owen Smith says that his innings helped South Africa strengthen South Africa’s world ratings with just four points behind Australia.

“Gibbs interestingly reached his century with just 77 balls which was two balls faster than the 175 that he reached in the famous 438 game against Australia,” says Smith.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori also described the innings by Gibbs as one of the best displays of batting that he had ever seen.

It was Gibbs’ 19th century spanning a career of 220 matches with an average of 36.65.

South Africa won the match with five wickets and 28 balls to spare winning the series 2-1.
