The National Sea Rescue Institute at the weekend said they will increase efforts to guard beaches because of the high influx of visitors to the coastal regions of South Africa.

People have been urged to take necessary precautions and to also follow beach rules.

The NSRI’s spokesperson Andrew Ingram said people need to look after their children and belongings at all times.

The NSRI has also urged people who are going to be spending time on the coast to wear their life jackets around water as a safety precaution.

The NSRI’s Ingram said that people should choose beaches that have life-savers on duty, and to swim within their flags.

“Parents should teach their children never to turn their backs on the sea, a wave can come through and wipe them off their feet” he cautioned.
