On Monday, North West Premier Thandi Modise was reminiscant of the Marikana disaster in her Christmas message.

On 16 August, police shot dead 34 mineworkers after they clashed during a wildcat strike at Lonmin Mine in Marikana.

Modise said though there were still problems in some areas, like unemployment, slow progress had been made.

Premier’s spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele said that as the year comes to a close, the Premiere remembers the bloodshed and tears that were shed during the tragic incident.

“She would like to thank the church leaders, traditional leaders for playing a significant role in facilitating mediation and supporting the negotiation process that ended in wage settlement and normalising relations in the mining sector” Lesiba added.
