Fire services in the Cederberg Wilderness Area on the Cape West Coast remain on high alert following a devastating fire.

The weeklong fire at Clanwilliam has claimed the life of a man.

Five homes were also gutted and over 24 000 hectares of vegetation destroyed.

Scores of people were evacuated as the wall of flames advanced.

Fire fighters, volunteers and community members refused to back down until the last minute Spotter planes, foam bombers and helicopters were roped in as the fire burnt high up in the mountains.

parked by lightning last week, high winds and heat fuelled the inferno.
