One person died in a shack fire in Gugulethu

The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management today responded to a fire at the Barcelona Informal Settlement in Gugulethu. 

The fire engulfed three shacks that were destroyed and left three people homeless. 

A burnt body of a 37-year-old, Zanemvula Maxwell Mkunqwana was also found by fire-fighters. 

City of Cape Town’s Head of Public Awareness and Preparedness Charlotte Powell said the Disaster Management Team is assessing the situation and they are assisting the victims with foods parcels and other necessities.

Powell added that the cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
