SADTU unimpressed by Limpopo rural allowance stoppage

The South African Democratic Teachers Union today said it is shocked by the decision of the Limpopo Department of Education to terminate rural allowance to educators as from this month.

This came about as a result of the decision by then Minister Naledi Pandor to give teacher a rural allowance.

Sadtu says the incentive was meant to attract and retain educators in deeply rural, no fee and remote schools.

Sadtu’s Limpopo Secretary Matome Raphasha said the allowances were terminated while they were still discussing the matter in the chamber both nationally and provincially.

“We do not understand reasons why they would terminate this in the middle of the budget without consulting the union” Raphasha said.

Raphasha said that it is only Limpopo who has terminated the allowance whilst other provinces are still paying the allowance.
