The Building and Allied Workers Union of South Africa today said that many farmworkers who returned to work, have been sent home after the suspension of the strike in the Western Cape.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions had formally called the strike off earlier this week.

Farmworkers are demanding that the minimum daily wage be increased from R69 to R150 and that a solid land reform programme be implemented.

BAWUSA’s Nosey Piterse said several workers were dismissed in numbers in Wolesley, de Doorns and Bergrivier areas.

“We are disappointed in what is happening, instead of trying to reconcile, farmers exacerbate the conflict by dismissing returning workers” Pieterse said.
