Opposition parties are calling for a judicial inquiry into the Gupta family’s involvement in affairs of state and say that Parliament should also launch its own investigation.

The calls came in response to Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas confirming that the Guptas had offered him the position of finance minister shortly before his then boss, Nhlanhla Nene, was sacked by President Jacob Zuma.

The Gupta family swiftly repeated its denial that there was any offer to Jonas, citing internal divisions within the African National Congress, but opposition parties are gearing for battle.
The Inkatha Freedom Party’s Narend Singh has called for a judicial commission of inquiry into the Gupta’s apparent hold over the president.
