Bullying at two Cape Flats schools reported in one week

Two teenagers have been arrested in Mitchell’s Plain after they stabbed two boys multiple times at Cedar High School, Rocklands on Thursday morning.

Western Cape police confirmed the incident saying that it occurred during interval on the stairs.

‘’Mitchells Plain police registered two counts of attempted murder cases following a stabbing incident on Thursday 15 August 2024 at around 10:20 a high school building in Rocklands. According to reports two males aged 17 and 18 were stabbed multiple times by other learners and were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,’’ said Anelisiwe Manyana, Western Cape police spokesperson.

Two suspects aged 17 and 18 were arrested on the mentioned charges.

Manyana believes that the motive behind this incident could be bullying.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says they provided counselling for those affected.

‘’WCED officials were at the school and counselling support is being provided. The situation at the school is under control. However, some parents have collected their children at school,” said Unathi Booi, WCED spokesperson on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a video of two schoolgirls fighting outside a school in Athlone has gone viral.

The WCED confirmed the incident occurred on Tuesday at Alexander Sinton High School.

‘’The WCED can confirm the incident that took place on Tuesday and the two learners are in Grade 9. The parents of both girls were called in on Wednesday. The School Governing Body (SGB) placed the aggressor on a 7-day precautionary suspension. The parents of both learners were informed that the SGB will institute disciplinary action as per the school’s code of conduct for learners,’’ said Millicent Merton, WCED spokesperson.

“The parent of the victim opened a case of assault against the perpetrator with SAPS. At this stage it is not clear what led to the incident,’’ she added.
