Eight suspects were
fatally shot at, and five others arrested following a cash in transit heist in
Khayelitsha on Monday evening.
The police’s Novela Potelwa
said officers were called to Town Two upon receiving information about a
possible heist.
‘’As the team
approached the suspects, the would-be robbers started firing shots at police
who retaliated. As a consequence, eight suspects were shot dead, and five were arrested,’’
said Brigadier
Novela Potelwa.
She says on the scene, police
confiscated 7x AK 47 Rifles, 2x R5 Rifles, a R4 Rifle, a Dashprod Rifle, 2x 9mm
pistols, and 3x Improvised Explosive Chargers. Numerous magazines filled with
rounds of ammunition were also confiscated.
Potelwa
says the Hawks has taken over the investigation and following up on additional
information.
The Western Cape’s Police
Oversight and Community MEC, Anroux Marais, praised the members for the arrest.
”The arms and
ammunition confiscated will no longer be used to terrorise our people, the suspect
arrested will be able to provide information on the origin of the confiscated
weapons and ammunition” said Marais.
