Steenberg H.S teacher suspended for corporal punishment

A teacher from Steenberg High School accused of administering corporal punishment to pupils has been found guilty of misconduct. It is alleged the educator has been administering corporal punishment since 2023.

Learners who had enough had, on Wednesday, filed charges at the local police station.

Police confirmed that they are probing a common assault case.

‘’Steenberg police registered an assault common case for investigation following an incident on Wednesday 21 August 2024. According to reports the parents and students alleges that a teacher is targeting them and hits the students with a ruler at school. No arrests have been made as yet,’’ said Anelisiwe Manyana, Western Cape police spokesperson.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says the teacher has been barred from entering the school.

‘’I can confirm that an educator has been charged and found guilty of misconduct. We await the ruling of the presiding officer on the sanction. The educator will not return to the school until the outcome of the sanction,’’ said Millicent Merton, WCED spokesperson.

Merton says its district office will provide counselling support to the learners.

A community activist, Lucinda Evans, wants the teacher to be removed from the profession entirely.

‘’ We as Parents send our Children to High School Steenberg High School for Educators to Inspire, Learn and Shape our Young Children’s Minds and Hearts. Yesterday I had a report about a Teacher who has done just the opposite in fact I am unset (sic) with the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) for taking the alleged innocent until proven Guilty Stance, this policy needs to be reviewed given the merit of the severity of the transgression.’’

‘’Leaving the Learners with an allege perpetrator for 11 months, and just the Trauma... I have stepped in and I am ensuring our Children do not need to Learn about a Tie Size and the size of genitalia or that our Children are named Racial names. My request is very clear and Decent remove this educator from the school immediately and never to return. I want this teacher’s registration to be de-registered by SACE, and never to work with children again,’’ added Lucinda Evans, community activist.
