The City of Cape Town has warned road users to obey the law

The City of Cape Town has warned road users to obey traffic laws after issuing over 40,000 fines for violations in the past week. The city's Mayco Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says there has been a significant increase in the number of drunk driving arrests as well.

In the past week, the city's enforcement agencies made 399 arrests, with 60 of those being for drunk driving. Smith noted that they are not even halfway through the month, yet the drunk driving arrests are already showing a concerning rise.

He explained that these high numbers are typically seen at the end of the month or on pay weekends, when drivers are less cautious. The recent long weekend likely contributed, though Smith said this behaviour is unacceptable given the dangerous conditions on the roads.

Smith stated that the city's traffic department is conducting more proactive and targeted operations to address these issues.
